Final fundraising run in Ridgetown

The fifth and final Sodbuster 5K Run/Walk is on Sunday at the University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus.

"The original intention of the race was to raise money for the new crop research centre, and to raise $100,000 was the goal, and we've exceeded that goal," said organizer Gary Paling. "The crop research centre is in the process, in the planning stages for going up, in the first phase."

Paling added that they've had a great five-year run.

"We've had so much to be thankful for. We've had great sponsorship from the local communities, the agri-business have been amazing. All the runners, that's what makes it all possible. It had been a great experience, and it's been good."

Paling says the route takes you right through the Ridgetown Campus.

"It's 5K, all within the campus. You wind around by the dairy barn, you usually see the dairy cattle out there, then down by the swine research centre, and the bio-digester. And then we go right out into the plots, where they are doing the crop research."

Registration opens at 8 a.m. and the 5K run or walk starts at 9 a.m. To register in advance, click here.

The first 350 participants will receive a t-shirt and a cowbell medal, plus food and refreshments afterwards. There is also free farm Olympics for kids aged 2-6 after the run.
