Doubleheader this weekend at Dresden Raceway

Harness horse racing will take over the track in Dresden for two days of the Canada Day long weekend.

Dresden Raceway is hosting races on Sunday, June 30 and Monday, July 1 because they had to cancel the races a few weeks ago when the track was too muddy and sloppy.

"The starting car couldn't move and it just wasn't safe for the horsemen or the horses, so we said, you know what, we'll call it a day," said track announcer Gary Patterson. "We applied for another date to make up for that date, and here we have it."

Patterson said Monday will feature some special races.

"We have five divisions of Ontario Sire Stakes three-year-old trotting fillies, and we have the second division of the Mark Austin Pacing Series. Mark Austin was a guy from Chatham, he passed away suddenly in 2014, but he was a horse trainer," he said.

There will also be lots of special giveaways this weekend, like Canada pins and flags.

"The track has just been absolutely amazing," said Patterson. "Lots of fun, and when you come on Sundays, you can feel a little bit of the excitement, you can feel some the fun. We've got lots of kids there, and if you haven't seen a horse, you can get, like literally feet away from a horse that's running 35 mph."

Post time for both days is 1:30 p.m. and admission is free.
