Man arrested after fleeing the scene of an accident

A two-vehicle collision on Keil Drive near Park Avenue in Chatham has led to the arrest of a 23-year-old Chatham man.

The collision occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Police said the driver allegedly fled the scene but was taken into custody a short distance away. He was charged with careless driving and failing to remain at the scene of an accident.

The name of the driver was not released. No one was injured in the collision. Damages are estimated to be around $15,000.

Police nab man who stole license plates

A 40-year-old Chatham man is in custody after allegedly being caught with stolen license plates on his Monte Carlo.

Police were made aware of the theft on Wednesday morning after a woman reported them missing from her Honda Civic. Police said the alleged culprit was pulled over driving down McNaughton Avenue in Chatham at approximately 6 p.m. the same day. An officer initiated a traffic stop and through investigation learned that the man was suspended from driving, driving with no insurance and not complying with his condition to reside in Niagara Falls.

The man is charged with possession of stolen property obtained by a crime under $5,000, failing to comply with his release conditions, driving with no insurance, using plates not authorized for the vehicle, and driving while under suspension.

His name was not released. His release is pending a bail hearing.

Police look for leads in $5,000 break and enter

Sometime on Wednesday afternoon jewellery and two ASUS laptops were stolen from a residence in Chatham.

Police say the break-in occurred between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Caledonia Road. The estimated value of the stolen items is $5,000.

Suspects remain on the loose.
