Bottle deposits pay dividends for blood cancer research

If you're thinking about heading to the Beer Store to return some of your empties from the long weekend, you may want to consider delaying that trip for a few days.

The 14th annual Returns for Leukemia Bottle Drive is set to take place next weekend on Saturday, May 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The initiative offers customers the chance to donate all or a portion of the deposits from their empty beer, wine, and spirit container returns to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada.

Last year's donations totalled $1.785 million.

Spokesperson and Maple Leafs broadcaster Joe Bowen said they have their sights set on eclipsing the $2 million this time.

"That's just astronomical," said Bowen. "I don't think this charity event gets enough publicity because I don't know of any event that would raise that kind of money on an annual basis over the course of one day."

Bowen said the cause is near and dear to his heart because his son Sean was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia as an infant back in 1991.

"When he was diagnosed, we were told it was a 95 per cent chance he'd be cured... but had it been 10 years earlier, it was [a 60 per cent chance] against," said Bowen. "It looks like what we have done in the past -- throwing money at it -- is making it go away."
