Completion date delayed for Lord Selkirk Bridge project

Some unexpected discoveries during construction have pushed back the re-opening date for a busy crossing on McNaughton Avenue in Wallaceburg.

An update from the Municipality of Chatham-Kent's Director of Engineering and Transportation Chris Thibert said the project is now expected to be complete by early October 2019.

Thibert said the delay is being pinned on "several deficiencies" that were discovered while the existing bridge deck was being removed.

"The majority of these deficiencies were not able to be determined until removals took place and properly exposed all interior elements," said Thibert. "In order to ensure the structural integrity of the bridge as well as public safety following construction, these deficiencies need to be corrected which require additional time and/or materials to complete."

It was previously hoped that the project, which has been completely closed for renovations since February, could be completed by sometime in August. Officials were aiming to have it done in time for the WAMBO event, but that won't happen.

"The bridge will remain closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic for the duration of construction," said Thibert. "However, marine traffic will continue to be accommodated."

Municipal officials are still planning to open up one sidewalk crossing the bridge in time for WAMBO so that people can still walk across.
