Flooding along Lake Erie has affected approximately 15 homes

Despite flood damage to approximately 15 homes along the Lake Erie shoreline, no residences have been evacuated.

The impact of flooding has lessened, however, warnings remain in effect for Rondeau Bay, Erieau, and the Lake Erie Shoreline as weather forecasts are calling for a total of 15 to 20 millimetres of rain from Thursday afternoon to Friday morning.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority issued a flood watch for the area on May 7, which was upgraded to a flood warning on May 8.

"Residents are urged to take extra caution due to strong waves and slippery shorelines as well as hazardous debris within the waves could be thrown onto the shoreline," the Municipality of Chatham-Kent said in a statement on Thursday. "Standing water can also present unseen hazards."

In addition to the existing conditions, a shift of prevailing winds to the south of the region on Thursday could increase the risk of flooding on Erie Shore Drive and other communities with south facing shorelines.

The Chatham-Kent Public Works department is currently installing barriers along the shoreline to limit the impact of flooding in low-lying areas where no break wall currently exists, and Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services is asking residents to be aware of the following checklist:

  • Move important items/documents upstairs from the basement
  • Secure outdoor furniture, outdoor décor, etc. and clear the outside areas of debris
  • Have a grab & go bag ready – plan for children, pets & those who may have special needs
  • Make arrangements now to relocate if necessary
  • Follow local media and official social media sources
  • Keep in touch with loved ones & check on neighbours
  • Always follow the instructions from local officials
  • Never drive or attempt to swim across flooded areas
  • Stay away from rivers, streams and standing water
