Keep your dog on a leash and pick up its poop, reminds Chatham police

Clean up and your dog's poop and keep them on a leash, Pet And Wildlife Rescue along with Chatham-Kent police are reminding residents.

Pamphlets were handed out today at O’Neill Nature Preserve near Oxley Drive in Chatham, where Animal Control and police frequently receive complaints about citizens letting their dogs run free.

A release from the Municipality of Chatham-Kent states a $240 fine could be given to owners who are not cognizant of the rules.

Under the Responsible Animal Ownership by-law, animal owners could face a fine if :

  • They fail to leash their dog in a public area.
  • They fail to pick up their dog's poop.
  • Refuse to purchase a municipal dog tag.
For those who prefer to let their dogs run free, the municipality is reminding residents of two "off-leash" parks in the region. John Wadell Trail at 59 Walter Street in Chatham, and Happy Tails Dog Park at 181 Baldoon Road in Wallaceburg.
