Charges laid after high-speed police chase

A 31-year-old Wallaceburg woman is facing a few charges following a high-speed chase on Highway 40 towards Chatham.

Chatham-Kent police said an officer tried to stop a vehicle Wednesday night when it was travelling southbound on the highway, just outside of Wallaceburg. The traffic stop was spurred by information about "a suspicious vehicle".

Instead of pulling over to the side of the road, police said the woman behind the wheel hit the gas pedal and allegedly nearly struck a cruiser and northbound vehicles. In an effort to stop the vehicle, a tire deflation device was deployed, but the driver continued to drive at a high rate of speed on the vehicle's rims.

The vehicle was eventually stopped by police near Pioneer Line. However, four police cruisers were damaged in the process. The damage is estimated at $5,000.

Police said no injuries were reported.

A 31-year-old woman is now charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and flight from police. She was also wanted on outstanding warrants for drug possession, flight from police, driving while under suspension, careless driving, and failing to attend court.
