Driver allegedly crashed Porsche before reporting it was stolen

A 20-year-old man is facing charges after crashing a luxury vehicle just outside of Chatham and then allegedly fleeing the scene before telling police the vehicle had been stolen.

Chatham-Kent police said they found a 2017 Porsche Cayenne abandoned in a field on Eighth Line near Merlin Road at around 7 a.m. last week Thursday.

The damage that was caused by the crash was estimated at $50,000.

Officers were later informed by the accused that the vehicle had been stolen, but through their investigation, police learned that the man had allegedly been lying.

A 20-year-old Chatham man was arrested in connection with the case and charged with public mischief, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. He has since been released with conditions and a future court date.
