Chatham's Fifth Street bridge slated for temporary closure

Motorists who take the Fifth Street bridge in Chatham to go to and from the downtown core will have to find an alternate route.

The bridge will be closed to traffic for about a month starting April 15.

Chris Thibert, director of engineering and transportation, said the closure is in relation to vandalism that occurred this past weekend. As previously reported, electrical wires along the bridge were cut and some of the ductwork under the bridge was damaged. The closure is in an effort to make sure the bridge is secure and to ensure safety to pedestrians and on-site workers.

Pedestrians will be able to use one side of the bridge during the closure. The Fifth Street bridge is expected to reopen to traffic May 13.

In the meantime, the routes for CK Transit 1 and 2 will have detours in place.
