Wooden table leg considered a weapon

A 32-year-old Chatham man is facing a weapons-related charge after police allegedly found more than just a trick up his sleeve.

Chatham-Kent police said they stopped the man shortly after 1:30 a.m. Monday after spotting someone running out of an apartment building on Thames Street in Chatham.

Officers said once they identified the man, they learned he was also allegedly out past his court-imposed curfew of 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Police said when they were searching the man after he had been arrested, they found a wooden table leg inside the sleeve of his sweater.

The accused is charged with failing to comply with his probation orders and possession of a dangerous weapon.

He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

Police search for alleged purse thief

Police are searching for a man who is accused of stealing a purse out of someone's home.

A man -- who is estimated to be 50-years-old -- went to a home on Bond Avenue in Tilbury Sunday afternoon and offered to repair the asphalt driveway. While going over a quote, the man asked to use the washroom. After he had left the residence, the homeowner noticed that a purse was missing. The purse was later found on Eighth Line near Bloomfield Road, however, all credit cards and debit cards were stolen.

Police said the man is described as being 5’4” or 5’5”, around 140-150 pounds, with light coloured hair and a bald spot. He was last seen wearing a light coloured spring jacket with dark coloured shoes and was driving an older model light coloured pick-up truck.

Break-in tools recovered during an arrest

Chatham-Kent police arrested a 34-year-old Chatham man early Monday morning after officers allegedly found some break-in tools on him.

Police said they stopped a man on Fourth Street in Chatham at around 3 a.m. and arrested him after finding the tools.

He remained in police custody Monday morning.

Traffic complaint leads to impaired driving charge

A 43-year-old Tilbury woman is charged with impaired driving after police followed up on a traffic complaint Sunday morning.

Police said they found the vehicle in Tilbury shortly after 8:30 a.m. Sunday and believed the woman was driving under the influence of alcohol.

She was taken back to police headquarters for breath tests and later charged with having a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit. The accused was later released pending a future court date.

Jewelry theft in Chatham

Chatham-Kent police are investigating after someone broke into a residence on Taylor Avenue in Chatham and stole approximately $2,500 worth of jewelry.

Officers said that happened sometime between 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday.

Traffic enforcement blitz in Blenheim

Chatham-Kent police said they handed out tickets to five drivers during a safety blitz in Blenheim Sunday.

The offences included using a hand-held device, disobeying a red light, and speeding.
