CKHA's cancer care program moving to make room for upgrades

The oncology program at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance is temporarily relocating so that upgrades can take place in the hospital's cancer care unit.

The work that is set to take place includes introducing an electronic medication dispenser (Omnicell machine) to the department, which officials said will improve patient safety.

The oncology program's temporary move is set to start on April 1, 2019 and will involve relocation to the Dr. Don Patterson Student Learning Centre at the Chatham site of the CKHA located in Zone A, Level 0. The work is expected to be complete in late May 2019.

A release from the CKHA said all of the patients who are affected by the temporary move have been notified, adding that signs will be posted throughout the hospital to guide patients and families to the proper area.

There could also be a brief interruption for the oncology unit's phone lines on Friday, March 29, 2019 as a result of the renovations.

In addition to the introduction of the Omnicell machine, the work that is set to take place includes:

- replacement of millwork in the chemo room with improved materials for infection control

- an additional hand-washing station

- a dedicated medication area with work surface adjacent to the Omnicell

- a new resource and waiting area that families can visit while their loved ones are receiving treatment

- expanded entry to the chemo room for openness and visibility

- relocation of reception staff to the entry of the unit to greet patients

- an alternative exit (following feedback from staff and administration)
