Axe-wielding man accused of domestic assault

A 47-year-old Chatham man is facing several charges after a family dispute took a violent turn.

Police said the man is accused of carrying around an axe while he damaged various doors in a Chatham home Monday night. He also allegedly assaulted a family member -- not with the axe, though.

The accused is charged with three counts of assault, one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and one count of mischief.

He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Traffic enforcement stops dozens of drivers

Chatham-Kent police are urging drivers to obey the rules of the road after a local traffic enforcement blitz ended with dozens of charges.

Police said the blitz across the municipality Monday stopped 25 motorists who were then charged speeding.

Five drivers were charged with having expired validation stickers and three were charged with driving with a hand-held device.

One driver was charged with not wearing a seatbelt and driving while under suspension and one person was charged with smoking with children present in the vehicle.

Police search for stolen vehicle

Chatham-Kent police are asking the public for tips as they try to track down a black 2013 Dodge Journey that was reported stolen early Tuesday morning.

Police said it was taken while it was left running outside of a business on Lacroix Street in Chatham at around 1 a.m.

It was last seen with Ontario licence plates CHNN 773 and anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Mark Smith at marksm@chatham-kent.ca or 519-436-6600 extension #87162.

Vehicle taken without permission, then returned by police

A 47-year-old Chatham man who wasn't supposed to be behind the wheel was allegedly caught driving a vehicle he didn't own.

Police said an officer pulled the man over on St. Clair Street in Chatham at around 8 a.m. Monday while he was driving a white Dodge Stealth even though his driver's licence was suspended for unpaid fines and remedial measures.

In addition to two counts of driving under suspension, the man was also charged with taking a motor vehicle without consent.

He was later released from custody with conditions and a future court date. The car was also returned to its rightful owner.

Woman punches her way into police custody

A 36-year-old Chatham woman has been arrested after allegedly breaking into her ex-boyfriend's apartment and punching another woman who was there with him.

Police said that happened Monday night, adding the woman started yelling at her ex and another woman who was in the apartment with him before she allegedly punched the other woman.

The accused is charged with assault and break-and-enter and has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Coffee with a Cop

Chatham-Kent police are extending an invitation to members of the public to join them on Wednesday, March 20 between 8: a.m. and 10 a.m. at McDonald’s on McNaughton Avenue in Wallaceburg for another Coffee with a Cop event.

It offers local residents a chance to have a casual conversation with police over a cup of coffee.
