Free throw champ not letting heart challenges hold him back

A grade seven student at Queen Elizabeth II Public School in Chatham is the top free throw shooter in the region.

Caiden Coll won the 12-year-old boys division at a regional competition put on by the Knights of Columbus in Belle River this past weekend.

What's even more impressive is that he took home the title while limited by a condition that causes him to have an irregular heart rate.

"Right now he's got a heart condition that's called Wolff-Parkinson," said Caiden's mom Megan Coll, adding that Caiden loves to play basketball and used to play on a travel team. "They've kind of limited him to the travelling because if that was to happen so far out in Toronto and I'm here in Chatham, they don't really want to put him, or themselves through that."

Despite those challenges, Megan said she is hopeful her son will be back to playing soon.

"He did travelling basketball for a whole year and then they pulled him out. He's got an upcoming appointment, so they are going to perform a surgery, a simple ablation," said Megan. "Hopefully, after that, he'll be able to get back out travelling and stuff."

Caiden won two free throw competitions in Chatham before he advanced to the regional event.

"There were kids from all over, from Amherstburg and stuff," said Caiden, "So we had to shoot like 25 free throws, and then the person who made the most won, and I shot 18 out of 25."

Caiden's score now goes to Toronto where they will compare the scores from across the province to declare a provincial winner.

"This kid devotes and dedicates his time to basketball," said Megan. "Even Christmas morning he was outside shooting hoops, the weather was perfect. He just has the love for basketball."
