Dog tag deadline approaching

Time is running out to get municipal dog tags if you want to avoid paying a late fee.

Technically, dog tags in Chatham-Kent expired at the end of December, but municipal officials are giving pet owner a little bit of leeway.

"We do give you to the 31st of March to purchase tags before you have to get that $10 late fee," said Licensing Assistant Olivia Genge. "If your dog's fixed, $28. [It's] $38 if they aren't."

After the deadline passes, enforcement officers will be out for about a 3-4 week period going door-to-door to make sure people have their dog tags updated.

"You want to make sure to get those tags before enforcement comes out because there is a $240 fine if you do get caught without those tags," added Genge.

Tags can be purchased at any municipal service centre in Chatham-Kent, by mail or over the phone through the municipality, or at the animal shelter in Chatham or Wallaceburg.
