'Suspicious vehicle' investigation cleared in Ridgetown

Chatham-Kent police are clarifying the circumstances of a report about a suspicious man and woman in a vehicle who approached a student in Ridgetown.

Police said a young girl who was waiting for the bus near her home on Victoria Road shortly after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday was approached by a man and a woman in a vehicle after she fell on a patch of ice.

Investigators said the pair asked the girl if she was OK, which she was. Police said the man and the woman both stayed inside the vehicle the whole time and neither of them tried to lure the girl.

Officers said schools in the area were notified of the incident as a precaution and police spoke with the girl's family, who confirmed that they saw her the whole time and there was no reason to believe she was in danger while speaking with the man and the woman who were in the vehicle.

The letters that were sent home with students from Nahii Ridge Public School and St. Michael Catholic Tuesday did not include details of the encounter between the student and the pair inside the vehicle.

The letter also drew some strong criticism from a local mother who said an email should have been sent to parents earlier in the day to advise them of the incident.
