RIDE spot checks in CK lead to charges

Provincial police in Chatham-Kent remain persistent in stopping drivers who refuse to follow the rules of the road.

In the past week, the OPP have conducted 10 RIDE checks across the municipality. In a release issued Tuesday, police said all drivers were compliant at each checkpoint.

"Chatham-Kent OPP members will continue to aggressively enforce the Highway Traffic Act with a commitment to keeping our roadways safe. Travelling at excessive speed or while under the influence of alcohol or illicit drugs is a recipe for disaster," the OPP said in the release. "Driving is a privilege and our officers will continue to identify and remove from our roadways those drivers not adhering to the law."

The OPP said between February 23 and February 25, four drivers were charged with stunt driving after allegedly going faster than 50 kilometres per hour over the speed limit. Police also said one driver who was stopped on Highway 401 was allegedly caught going more than 170 kilometres per hour with a suspended licence. In a separate case, a driver who was pulled over for speeding was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

Provincial police also stated that on two separate days, officers seized speed measuring warning devices, which resulted in a provincial offence notice for each driver caught with one.
