Man rescued from freezing cold river in Chatham

A 28-year-old Chatham man was taken to the hospital for medical attention after falling into the Thames River in Chatham Thursday night.

Police said emergency crews were called to the scene behind Thames Grove Conservation Area after hearing reports that a man was in the water.

An officer was reportedly able to pull the man to safety on the south side of the river and three bystanders stepped in to help carry the man to an ambulance that was waiting nearby on Stanley Avenue.

It's not clear what condition the man was in at the time he was taken to the hospital.

Thursday night's incident follows a number of other ice water rescue calls that Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services (CKFES) officials have responded to over the past few weeks.

According to CKFES Public Educator Whitney Burk, emergency crews were called to two separate incidents on some ice just last weekend. Both of those cases involved people who were on ATVs when their vehicles fell through the ice.

"We've been very lucky that no one has been seriously hurt," said Burk. "You want to make sure that if you're going to be travelling on the ice that it is safe."

CKFES has responded to about 10 incidents so far in 2019, which is a significant increase over the same time period in 2018 -- at this time last year, they had not responded to any ice water rescue calls.
