Maroons outlast Legionnaires 7-5

The Chatham Maroons topped the Sarnia Legionnaires 7-5 in GOJHL action on Thursday.

Griffin Robinson kicked the game off for Chatham with a goal 4:43 into the first period, but Sarnia was able to tie the game with a goal of their own late in the frame.  The Maroons took a 2-1 lead, however, thanks to a goal from Nolan Gardiner with 11 seconds left in the period.

Matt Murray and Maddux Rychel scored back-to-back goals in the second to extend the lead for the Maroons.  In the action-packed final minutes of the second, Sarnia scored at the 18:53 mark, but Rychel scored his second of the night with 30 seconds left in the period. The Legionnaires added one more before the end of the frame to cut Chatham's lead down to 5-3.

Sean O'Brien and Gardiner both scored early in the third to push Chatham to seven goals.  The Legionnaires also scored twice in the final minutes but couldn't catch up to the Maroons before the buzzer.

Maroons goaltender Tristan Lewis made 33 saves out of 38 shots on net.

The Maroons are in St. Marys on Friday to take on the Lincolns at 7:30 p.m.
