Super Bowl RIDE program catches an impaired driver

A 43-year-old Windsor man is facing an impaired driving charge after allegedly failing a roadside test at a RIDE program stop in Chatham-Kent Sunday night.

Police said the man was arrested, taken to police headquarters for further tests and charged with having a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit.

He was later released with conditions and a future court date.

Officers stopped 326 vehicles during the RIDE spot checks in Chatham, Wallaceburg, Tilbury, and Blenheim on Sunday and cautioned six drivers for undisclosed Highway Traffic Act offences.

Homeowner follows break-in suspects

Two Chatham residents are facing charges after a local man reportedly came home to find his home had been broken into.

Chatham-Kent police said the man arrived at his home Sunday morning just as a man and a woman were leaving with some stolen cash and two watches with a combined value of $1,200.

Police said at that point, the homeowner got into a verbal argument with the pair, but they took off before officers could arrive at the scene. The homeowner reportedly tried to follow the suspects, but they drove away too quickly for him to catch up with them.

Investigators were able to identify a pair of suspects in and arrested them.

A 36-year-old Chatham man and a 25-year-old Chatham woman are both charged in connection with the case. The man has been held in custody pending a bail hearing while the woman who was arrested has been released with conditions and a future court date.

Man arrested on an outstanding warrant

If a person walks into an LCBO store by themselves, that won't usually get the attention of police -- but in this case, it did.

A 21-year-old Chatham man has been arrested after he allegedly walked into the liquor store on Wellington Street on January 20 and tried to steal a bottle of vodka. Officers said the man returned the bottle when he was confronted by an employee.

That wasn't the end of the man's troubles, though, because police said they learned he had attended the LCBO store alone, even though he had previously been released from court with a condition of not attending any retail stores unless he was accompanied by someone without a criminal record.

As a result of their investigation, police issued a warrant for the man's arrest and picked him up Sunday morning.

He was charged with failing to comply and released with conditions and a future court date.
