New animal shelter coming along as planned

Construction on Chatham-Kent's new animal shelter is on schedule according to those involved.

Marjorie Crew, co-chair of the Friends of the New Animal Shelter Committee, said barring any unforeseen circumstances, the building is on course for a springtime opening.

Crew said the committee recently took their first tour of the building to see how it's shaping up. The heating and cooling system is ready to go and drywall is currently being installed.

"It's still very much a constriction zone," said Crew. "But, it's really exciting to see this project finally out of the ground and seeing our dream of an animal shelter that's good for all of the animals in Chatham-Kent coming to reality."

Crew said that when all is said and done the shelter will be a bright, clean and welcoming space for animals. Making sure they had a significant amount of space was a top priority.

"Looking at the dog runs and everything in there, there's so much room in there compared to what they have now," Crew said. "It's really going to be nice to see the dogs, cats and small animals having the space they need."

According to Crew, they still need to raise around $60,000 to go towards the furnishing of the building and to purchase specialized animal equipment.

The new animal shelter is being built behind the current shelter on Park Avenue East in Chatham. The current building will be turned into a parking lot.
