ATV driver saved by snowmobilers after falling through ice

A 62-year-old Lakeshore man is expected to make a full recovery after falling through the ice in Mitchell's Bay on Tuesday.

The Ontario Provincial Police said officers were called around 10:30 a.m. by the operator of an ATV who fell through the ice and was in water up to his neck. According to officers, he was able to get out of the water and make his way towards shore.

Police said he was located over an hour later at 11:40 a.m. by snowmobilers and taken to shore where he was transported to an area hospital by Chatham-Kent Emergency Medical Services.

The OPP is reminding anyone planning on going onto bodies of water that, although current temperatures usually mean sufficient ice coverage, it is not always the case. Police ask the public to continue to make safety the number one priority.
