Health unit cracking down on illegal vaping around schools

Several students in Chatham-Kent have been hit with fines over the last few weeks for vaping in prohibited areas and the public health unit said it is increasing enforcement.

According to Jeff Moco, a youth engagement coordinator with the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit, there have been a total of 25 complaints from across all the high schools in Chatham-Kent regarding illegal vaping this school year. That number is up significantly as Moco said the average over the past couple of years was two to three total. He added the health unit's tobacco enforcement officer has fined seven students recently.

In a news release issued Wednesday, Moco said the health unit will be increasing inspections and enforcement in and around school properties. He added smoking or vaping of any kind is prohibited within 20 metres of any school.

"Furthermore, smoking or vaping on a school bus, or in any enclosed public place or workplace, is prohibited under the Smoke-Free Ontario Act," Moco said in the release. "There are several fines associated with these types of violations."

Fines range from $305 for smoking or vaping on school properties to $490 for providing a minor with tobacco or vaping products.

Moco said as vaping products become more readily available it is important for youth to know that the dangers of long-term use are unknown and it increases the chances of tobacco use.
