Minor injuries reported in Chatham blaze

Damage is estimated at $100,000 after a house in Chatham went up in flames.

Firefighters from two stations were called to a house on Colborne Street around 1 a.m. Sunday.

The blaze reportedly started with a couch on fire but the flames eventually spread to the rest of the house.

At the time, it was unknown if anyone was still inside the house so firefighters went in to search for victims and extinguish the fire. Police officers were eventually able to find the proper residents and confirm they were safe.

"Everyone worked incredibly hard in very cold and windy conditions to contain this fire and demonstrated the skills and determination we have come to expect from our crew,” said Operations Chief Chris Case.

Although no injuries were reported among those who lived at the house, one firefighter suffered minor injuries. He has since been released from the hospital and is recuperating at home.

Fire officials said due to the severity of the fire, the cause is going down as undetermined.
