Maroons nip Sarnia 2-1 in double-OT

Griffin Robinson scored the winner in double-overtime as the Chatham Maroons beat the Sarnia Legionnaires 2-1 at Memorial Arena Sunday night.

The Maroons have leapfrogged Leamington and taken second place in the GOJHL Western Conference with 55 points. The Legionnaires are in fourth place, having squeezed out a point to reach 38.

The two teams exchanged goals in the opening period. Maddux Rychel connected at 2:22 to put Chatham up 1-0. Isaac McLean tied the game for Sarnia later in the frame.

There was no scoring in the middle stanza, with the Maroons having two power-play chances and the Legionnaires one. Chatham outshot Sarnia 13-11 in the period.

The third period was perfect, with no scoring or penalties, and Chatham outshooting Sarnia 15-8. The first overtime period passed quietly with the Maroons taking a 3-1 advantage in shots. Robinson's winner came at 1:17 in the second overtime.

Tristan Lewis took the win between the pipes for Chatham, stopping 28 out of 29 shots. Jakob Knowles had 48 shots in goal for the Legionnaires.

Sarnia's next contest is Thursday night at home against the St. Thomas Stars. The Maroons head to LaSalle on Wednesday. Puck drop for that one is at 7 p.m. and all the action can be heard on CFCO Country 92.9FM/AM 630.
