Applications open for Citizen's Police Academy

Chatham-Kent residents now have the chance to learn about policing tactics within the community.

The Citizen's Police Academy is set to start March 6. The program acts as a way to educate people about policing within the municipality and further enhance a partnership between the community and the police force. The program is not a course where residents will receive police training.

Those who are chosen to participate in the program will learn from various police units, which include drugs and street crime, major crime investigation, identification and forensics, crime prevention, the critical incident response team, and traffic. People in the program will also get the opportunity to take part in a ride-along with an officer.

Applicants for the program must be 19 or older and will be the subject of a background investigation. Application forms can be found online or at a municipal service centre in Chatham-Kent. The deadline to apply is February 22.

The program includes 12 classes, which will be held Wednesday nights from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Only successful candidates will be contacted.
