Tilbury house fire ruled accidental

Chatham-Kent fire crews are estimating the damages at $285,000 after an overnight blaze at a home on Massey Drive in Tilbury.

Fire officials said firefighters from Tilbury, Merlin, and Wheatley were all called to the scene just after 12 a.m. Thursday, adding that an occupant who was awake at the time called it in after noticing the exterior of the home was on fire.

When fire crews arrived, they saw the fire had also begun to spread into the attic, fueled by high winds at the time.

An aerial ladder from Tilbury was used to help firefighters knock down the bulk of the fire in the attic and to prevent the flames from spreading to neighbouring homes.

Crews remained at the scene for a few hours in order to make sure the fire in the attic was extinguished. There were no injuries reported as a result of the fire and the cause was ruled "accidental."

CK fire officials are also reminding residents that when a fire occurs in a building, it is important to get out right away, call 911 and stay out.
