Mayor and council respond to Wallaceburg vandalism

Damage done to a washroom in Glen Mickle Park has been estimated at $3,000 to $5,000 and the municipality isn't taking it lightly.

Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff along with Wallaceburg councillors Carmen McGregor and Aaron Hall have expressed frustration over the vandalism.

“There is no excuse for this,” Canniff said. “It is senseless destruction with no purpose.”

Chatham-Kent police reported Wednesday morning that the locked washroom had been broken into either Monday night or early Tuesday when an unknown number of suspects allegedly spray painted the walls and broke toilets and urinals.

McGregor called the act disappointing.

“Repairs come from the pockets of taxpayers," McGregor said. “We have far better use for your tax dollars than to be paying for these kinds of actions.”

Hall encouraged local residents to sign up for the new online Neighbourhood Protect program, which is a communication tool the Neighbourhood Watch in Wallaceburg is using.

Canniff added the amount of damage is the equivalent to more than 1,000 people receiving public skating or more than 15 hours of prime ice time.

All three municipal officials are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Chatham-Kent police or Crime Stoppers.
