Freezin' for a reason

Organizers are looking for some brave souls who are willing to jump into a pool full of freezing cold water in the middle of January for a good cause.

The 2nd annual Polar Plunge is set to take place at the St. Clair College Thames Campus in Chatham on Saturday, January 19.

"Instead of just going one plunge, like we did last year, we've opened it up to two different plunges," said constable Jason Herder. "We've got a 2 o'clock plunge for the afternoon, and for those who are willing to bear it, we've got a nighttime plunge party set for 6 o'clock, you can jump under the lights."

A charity BBQ will be held between the two plunge times, but Herder said they've added more than just a second plunge.

"We've added a judges tent this year. So for both plunges, we're going to have three judges for each one. Giving away prizes for best costume, and for the best jump for both plunges. As well there's going to be incentive prizes for those who are out fundraising, and prizes for best highest fundraiser. And everything goes to Special Olympics Ontario."

Stephanie Woodall, Programming and Projects Coordinator with St. Clair College, says they want to raise $20,000.

"Last year we exceeded our goal by about $4,000, this year we are looking to double it. We need some people to get into the pool and jump, so we are challenging everyone."

Those willing to brave the cold can register online. The cost to register is $100, but if you raise over $150, the registration fee is waived.
