CK cop facing assault charges

A Chatham-Kent police officer is now facing criminal assault charges in connection with an incident that occurred last year.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said it became aware of an allegation regarding one of its officers on November 27, 2018 and asked the Windsor Police Service to conduct a criminal investigation into the incident.

As a result of the investigation, Chatham-Kent Police Service Cst. Andrew Jaconelli has been charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of assault with a weapon in connection with an incident that occurred while Jaconelli was off duty in November 2017. He has also been charged with discreditable conduct under the Police Services Act.

Jaconelli was in court on Friday and has been released on bail with specific conditions. He is scheduled to appear in court again on January 8, 2019 at the Chatham courthouse.

The police constable was suspended from duty with pay on Friday.

Anyone who has information regarding these allegations is asked to contact the Chatham-Kent Police Service Professional Standards Branch at 519-436-6617.

Jaconelli is the third officer with the Chatham-Kent Police Service to recently answer to criminal charges.  Former CK officer Kenneth Miller who was previously sentenced to jail time for breach of trust in March of 2018, was again charged in November 2018 with sexual assault and breach of trust.  As well, in September 2018, former CK police officer Robert Mugridge was sentenced to 90 days in jail after pleading guilty to defrauding over 40 people of almost $250,000 over five years.
