Construction officially underway on New Scotland Line

Drivers who have been affected by the detour on New Scotland Line in Harwich Township for the past seven months will be pleased to hear the road will reopen next week.

According to Chatham-Kent administration, the repairs to the culvert will be completed by December 18. The construction between Kent Bridge Road and Mull Road was scheduled to start in mid-November but was pushed back due to weather.

The almost four-kilometre section of road was closed May 5 after the culvert beneath New Scotland Line failed.

The municipality awarded the $422,000 contract to South Shore Contracting of Essex in September after an engineering report was done. According to administration, the contract was 16 per cent below the engineer’s estimate.

A media release from the municipality said workers are currently removing the failed culvert and will immediately install the new one.

The release added there will be a temporary gravel surface at the culvert until next spring when it will be replaced by an asphalt surface.
