Construction on New Scotland Line pushed back again

Chatham-Kent officials are apologizing for the construction delay on New Scotland Line but are hopeful that construction will start soon.

Chris Thibert, director of engineering and transportation, said construction crews are expected to be on the site the week of December 3.

"We haven't pinned down an exact date yet only because we've promised a few dates here in the past, obviously there have been additional delays with the contractor getting to the site," he said.

New Scotland Line between Kent Bridge Road and Mull Road has been closed since May 5. Construction work was originally set to be finished by November 30, however, it was then stated that work wouldn't start until the week of November 26. Thibert said the reasons behind the delays have to do with a separate project that the contractor is working on, outside of the municipality.

"It is very weather sensitive, with respect to there's asphalt and concrete work that has to get done so it's all based on their current project that they're working on [and] needing the right temperatures in order to finish that up before they demobilize from that site and mobilize to our site," he said.

Although start dates for work on New Scotland Line have been pushed back, Thibert said the plan still remains the same. The current culvert will be removed and replaced. Once a new culvert is installed, a layer of gravel will be placed on the road as a temporary solution until the spring of 2019.

"Then we'll be back in the spring for about a day probably, to do the asphalt work," he said.

Thibert said that the municipality will be updating their construction projects website to provide local residents with updates for when construction work actually starts.
