Former CK police officer faces new charges

A former Chatham-Kent police officer who was previously sentenced to jail time for breach of trust is facing more charges now.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said Kenneth Miller has been charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of breach of trust in connection with an alleged incident that reportedly took place in November 2014, while he was still an active police officer.

Miller was arrested and charged after the SIU was contacted by Chatham-Kent police on March 28, 2018 regarding a sexual assault complaint that was made by a woman. The SIU said he was later released with several conditions.

One of those conditions is that he must refrain from communicating directly or indirectly with the complainant. Miller has also been ordered to answer to the charges at the courthouse in Chatham on December 11, 2018.

Miller resigned from the Chatham-Kent Police Service in March 2018 shortly before he was sentenced to 60 days in jail. He received that sentence after pleading guilty to one count of breach of trust in connection with an investigation into an incident with an intoxicated woman in a marked police cruiser in a parking lot in August 2015.

Miller was also previously charged in connection with an alleged sexual assault that reportedly took place in May of 2013 involving a 33-year-old woman, but those charges were later dropped. At the time, the crown attorney cited Miller’s guilty plea as a sign of remorse, adding that dropping the charges would also spare one of the victims from testifying in court.

In a victim impact statement during Miller's sentencing hearing in March, the victim’s mother called Miller a “monster” and said that he crushed her daughter’s dreams and broke her heart.
