Hundreds of volunteers, $180,000 in donations and 700 turkeys.
That’s what it takes to put on the Chatham Goodfellows' "No Child Without a Christmas" campaign.
For the 64th year, the local Goodfellows are providing baskets for Chatham families in need and residents have until Friday, November 30 if they wish to register for the program. Everyone who signs up will receive a basket and no background checks are done.
Baskets include toys for children and hygiene products for teenagers. The family will also get all the fixings for a traditional holiday dinner including a turkey, fruit, bread and dessert. Baskets are hand delivered to participating families by a Goodfellow volunteer in mid-December.
Chatham Goodfellows board member Tim Mifflin said that so far this year they have had around 1,000 families sign up. In 2017 they donated 1,400 baskets and Mifflin believes they will reach that number again this year by the time registration closes.
“Our fundamental goal is to ensure no children is without a Christmas, that’s why we do it,” said Mifflin.
