Cause "undetermined" after apartment fire in Chatham

A quick response by Chatham-Kent firefighters stopped an apartment fire in Chatham before it could spread to some nearby units.

Local fire officials said the cause of the blaze at 46 Richmond Street is going down as "undetermined" and the damages are estimated at $15,000, but no injuries were reported.

Fire crews were called to the scene just after 7 p.m. Sunday and while there was still significant smoke and water damage to the apartment where the fire originated, crews were able to extinguish the flames quickly, limiting the damage to the rest of the building.

Fire officials are also taking the opportunity to issue a reminder to tenants that they are required by law to notify their landlords if their smoke isn't working properly. It is also against the law for tenants to remove batteries or tamper with a smoke alarm in any way.
