Man Charged with Fraud

A Chatham man was arrested and charged with fraud after allegedly convincing an elderly woman to give him her debit card information.

According to officers, the incident happened early November when the man approached the woman's home in Chatham. A police report stated she gave him her card and pin number under the presumption he was going to help her make purchases, but the man took the card and she never saw him again.

Through investigation, police learned the man used the card to purchase various items around Chatham for himself.

Officers arrested him Wednesday and charged him with eight counts of fraud and failing to comply with his release conditions.

Police also arrested him on outstanding warrants for similar offences. The 38-year-old Chatham man has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Woman Charged with Theft

A Belle River woman was charged with theft after allegedly stealing from two separate locations in Chatham.

According to police, the woman attended Walmart around 9:30 p.m. and allegedly placed two pairs of headphones valued at $60 each in her shopping bag. Officers alleged that she left the store without attempting to pay for the items.

Police said she then attended the Real Canadian Superstore and did the same thing with two containers of face cream, valued at $18 each.

The 31-year-old Belle River woman was arrested around 9:50 p.m. and charged with two counts of theft and two counts of being in possession property obtained by crime.

Police added through investigation they learned she was also wanted on several outstanding warrants.

The woman has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE)                       

On Wednesday night, police officers and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) members, conducted RIDE spot checks in Chatham, Blenheim, Wheatley and Ridgetown.

According to police, over 600 vehicles were stopped in Chatham with two roadside tests being administered, and two drivers were issued tickets.

A total of 42 vehicles were stopped in the other areas, yielding no infractions.

Motor Vehicle Collision

Police responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Merlin Road Wednesday morning.

According to officers, the driver lost control of their vehicle, left the roadway and entered a water-filled ditch. Both female occupants escaped and were transported to hospital as a precaution.

Police estimated the total damage at $2,500 and said no charges were laid.

Theft in Chatham
