Chatham-Kent hosting 3rd Annual Diverse City Party

Hundreds of local residents are expected to flock to the Canadian Belgium Dutch Club in Wallaceburg Saturday afternoon to celebrate diversity and social inclusion.

Project co-ordinator Jason Stubitz says some of them will be participants, while dozens more will be spectators, hoping to catch a glimpse of some unique cultural displays.

"It's an action-packed two-and-a-half hours where they'll be able to see several different cultural performances and really see the cultural diversity that Chatham-Kent has to offer," said Stubitz.

The performances at the event will include displays from the Portuguese Club's Folklore Group, a dance group from the Bkejwanong Walpole Island First Nation, the Cornell School of Irish Dance, and the Chatham-Kent Asian Cultural Association.

There will also be some food sampling opportunities from vendors including Mr. Shawarma, Bangkok Cafe, A1 Chinese Restaurant, and James Street Eatery.

Stubitz said organizers are excited to move the event to Wallaceburg this year after seeing prior success in Chatham in 2016 and Blenheim last year.

"With any event, [the first time] you're not sure about the outcome of it, but it was super positive," said Stubitz. "Even taking it into a smaller community and still seeing that interest in it, it has been positive feedback and that's why we're hosting it for the third year now."

The Diverse City Party is running from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and it's free to enter, but $5 for food sampling.
