Chatham-Kent police are warning the public about a scam that tricked a Chatham man into giving out his banking information over the phone.
Police said the man reported the fraud at police headquarters last month after losing $46,000 from his line of credit and savings account.
The man reported to police that he received a call from a man with an East Indian accent who told him that he was part of an internal investigation at a local bank in Chatham. The caller then asked the man to help with the investigation by withdrawing money from his account and transferring it to another bank.
The man was told not to tell anyone about the transaction because it was part of a "secret police investigation."
The man later learned that he had lost thousands of dollars and contacted Chatham-Kent police, who are investigating the incident. Police said they are bringing the incident to the public's attention in an "attempt to prevent others from falling prey to this same banking scam."
