Environment Canada issues strong wind warning for CK & Elgin County

A strong wind warning has been issued for Western Lake Erie.

Environment Canada's Marine Forecast says strong winds from the southeast and south this evening and overnight brings the potential for shoreline damage along Lake Erie.

Sustained wind speeds are expected to be more than 35 km/h. Overnight, winds could gust up to 70 km/h, with waves reaching 1.5 metres high.

Environment Canada says there is potential for gale warnings Tuesday and Wednesday as winds get even stronger.

In Chatham-Kent and Elgin County, especially flood prone areas like Erie Shore Drive and Wheatley, there is a risk of flooding. The Municipality of Chatham-kent has closed Rose Beach Line over South Marsh Creek because of erosion from Lake Erie along the edge of the road. It's unknown how long the closure will last. There is no detour route posted for this road closure, the alternative route is Talbot Trail and Kent Bridge Road.

The Rose Beach Line area is also at risk. Previous winds have caused erosion along Rose Beach Line, blocking creek outlets and municipal drainage.

Environment Canada is warning residents to take extra caution to avoid the shoreline. They say strong waves can throw hazardous debris onto the shoreline. Standing water can also pose a hazard.  Children and pets should be kept away from the water.

Weather officials will provide updates as necessary.
