Local motor sports club launches second annual food drive

The Chatham-Kent ATV Club is back on the road this year trying to stock local food banks and they need the community's help.

This is the second year of "Feed the Hunger in Chatham-Kent," which plans to fill a 16-foot trailer with nonperishable food items.

According to club President Vince Masse the drive officially started Thursday and will run through November 17.

"We are looking to support eight or more food banks and soup kitchens throughout Chatham-Kent," Masse said. "We wanted to exceed what we did last year. Last year we did it on the fly and only put about two and a half weeks of planning time into and were very successful."

Masse said the group filled the entire enclosed trailer plus two more pickup trucks and hopes to double that this year. He added the holiday season is the busiest and most important for food banks.

"We are just looking for as much community support as possible," Masse said. "There are a lot of food bank shelves that are starting to get empty, well that's what we are hearing. We hope to fill up a lot of empty spots on their shelves as Christmas is Approaching."

The president said the idea originated at their first meeting where they decided everyone in the club would bring in canned goods to donate to local food banks. He added it snowballed from there to organize an all-out food drive.

Bobs Motor Sport in Chatham along with Hudson Motorcycles and Delta Power Equipment in Tilbury will be accepting food donations until November 17. Anyone who can't donate food physically can donate money on the ATV club's GoFundMe page. Masse said all the money will go directly to buying more food, which will also be donated. He added the goal is $2,500 and they currently sit just over $2,000.

The deadline for donations on the website is also November 17.
