Email asks for gift cards

Chatham-Kent police are warning the public about an email scam that is making the rounds online.

Officers said the latest one they received a tip about asked the recipient to buy three $100 iTunes gift cards for a colleague who was undergoing surgery. The author asked the recipient to send pictures of the gift cards that show the 16-digit PIN on the back of the card.

The author also advised in the email that they couldn't buy the gift cards because they were travelling, but assured the recipient they would pay for them once they returned.

Investigators said in this case, the person who received the email recognized it as a fake and didn't end up following the instructions.

Officers are asking anyone who receives a similar email to delete it immediately and report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/index-eng.htm.
