Chatham-Kent businesses celebrating workplace wellness

Three CK businesses are sharing their workplace wellness success at a free workshop.

On Oct. 24, a free half-day workshop allows employers the opportunity to learn about the importance of workplace wellness. Dresden Industrial KSR, Transform and the Tilbury District Family Health Team will all be recognized for their commitment to wellness over the last few years.

The three businesses will share how their programs were set up and how they operate. All three will also share stories about their successes and challenges while putting these programs in place. Audience members can expect to walk away with ideas on how to get employees engaged in wellness activities.

According to event organizer Michelle Bogaert, studies show for every $1 spent on workplace wellness programs, employers receive $3-$10 back in a variety of ways, including improved productivity and fewer injuries.

“We know the job market is changing for employees today and so what they’re looking for is what an employer can offer them, not just their wage,” said Bogaert, a health educator with the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit.

Bogaert says employers with a wellness program can also expect to see higher retention rates and an improved corporate culture.

“If an employer has a good culture, like with a wellness program, they’ll consider that place of employment over somewhere else,” said Bogaert.

The fourth annual workshop will also look at how employers can work on wellness in the community. Each year the health unit tries to improve the workshop.

“Each time we’ve tried to build on input from the participants,” said Bogaert. “The main thing we’ve changed is making it a half day workshop.”

Participants said that made it easier for them to get to.
