Dresden Raceway officials pleased to get more funding

Officials at Dresden Raceway are celebrating the Ontario government's decision to continue supporting horse racing.

That announcement was made last week.

President of the Dresden Agricultural Society Lucille Laprise said they were pleased when they heard.

"They made a great presentation on both sides," said Laprise. "But we elected to accept the extra funding because it was more viable to the sustainability of harness racing here in Dresden."

They funding will help the track when they lose the slots at racetrack program next year. Details of how much money they will receive have not yet been disclosed, but the board members will meet to decide what the funding should be used for.

"Everybody has different ideas right, and there are so many things that it can be used for," said Laprise. "But we want to make sure that it's useful for the Ag Society, and the harness racing, and of course, the community."

Laprise said the news gives them a sense of security for the future.

"Racing is on the up and up, and people seem to be investing more in horses again," said Laprise. "So, this is really encouraging for the harness racing, not just in Dresden, but all over."

Dresden Raceway will host 11 races in 2019 starting in May and ending in August.
