Possible sewage contamination in Bothwell

Municipal drains in the Bothwell area may be contaminated with sewage.

Officials with the municipality sent out a media release Wednesday evening stating they had been ordered to notify residents of the possible contamination on September 21 by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.

The sewage contamination stems from tests done by the ministry in May of 2017. The drains in question are the Burke Drain, Burke Drain Extension and Dankey Creek Drain.

"The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit advises that they have had no reports of adverse effects on human health," as stated in a media release. "Residents are advised to avoid direct contact with the waterways and ensure children and pets do as well."

Signs in Bothwell Township will be posted by October 12, to make it clear that the water may be contaminated, as per orders handed to the municipality from the ministry.
