Shoplifting investigations lead to three arrests

The security officers at the Walmart in Chatham had a busy day Tuesday.

First, they stopped a 27-year-old Chatham man after he allegedly shoved a streaming device down his pants and walked out of the store without paying for it.

Chatham-Kent police said a security officer at the Walmart in Chatham saw it happen Tuesday afternoon.

When the man was confronted by the officer, he allegedly gave the item back and then took off running. He was stopped a short distance away, though, and police were called in.

The man who was arrested is charged with theft, possession of stolen property, and escaping lawful custody.

He was taken into police custody pending a bail hearing.

In a separate incident at around 9:30 p.m., police said a 25-year-old Chatham woman was confronted by a security officer at the same Walmart store.

In this case, police said the woman was allegedly seen leaving the store without paying for approximately $1,000 worth of groceries in her cart.

Officers arrested her and charged her with theft and possession of stolen property.

Police also arrested a man who was with her at the time after learning he was out past his curfew of 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Both of the accused in the second case have been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
