West Nile virus detected in northeast Chatham

More mosquito traps in Chatham have tested positive for West Nile virus.

The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit reported a positive test for mosquitos caught in the northeast end of Chatham.

The most recent traps to test positive for the virus were located in southeast Chatham last week. However, throughout the summer months, traps in Dresden and Wallaceburg also tested positive.

Officials with the health unit said in a media release Monday that the likelihood of getting infected by a mosquito bite is low. For the most part, people infected with West Nile virus either show no symptoms or flu-like symptoms.

As a precaution, residents are reminded to take protective measures such as using bug spray with DEET and avoiding the outdoors when mosquitoes are most active.
