Chatham Bridge Inspections To Cause Lane Closures

There are some bridge lane closures to keep in mind this week in Chatham--but not to worry, it won't add much time to your commute.

The following bridges will have intermittent lane restrictions:

  • Lacroix St. Bridge: Wednesday, August 1 from 7am to 5pm
  • Third St. Bridge: Thursday, August 2 to Friday, August 10 from 7am to 5pm
Chatham-Kent’s Director of Engineering and Transportation Chris Thibert says he's expecting very minimal delays to traffic.

"We're not anticipating any full closures with this. We will maintain the one lane of traffic in both directions, so there will be a little bit of a delay especially during peak times, but we're not anticipating any substantial delays with this," he says.

Thibert says there's going to be a combination of a visual inspection, both on top and below the bridge.

"They're going to be utilising special equipment to get below and take a look at the underside of the bridge to do a proper full detailed inspection of the structure," explains Thibert. "There will also be core sampling taking place of the actual bridge deck itself."

Thibert says the municipality does a detailed assessment of all its bridges every other year, but these bridges were identified as having a need for rehabilitation.

"As a result of our annual inspections that we do, it drove out the need to do a more detailed assessment with these bridges," he says. "[This is] so that we can determine the level of rehabilitation and design effort that's required, which will happen next year."

Thibert says he appreciates everyone's cooperation during all the construction projects that are happening in Chatham this summer.
