Waterspout Catches Fishermen By Surprise

A Chatham-Kent resident is reliving his close encounter with a waterspout on Lake Erie.

Kevin Galbraith posted a video on Facebook of the waterspout he saw while out fishing about five miles off the shore near Clearville on Sunday morning.

"It was all clear, everything, for that morning, and that's how quick these things popped up," says Galbraith. "It was about 10:30 am, I guess, we started noticing some clouds out in the lake beyond where we were. So then there was a small waterspout, that was the first one but that was of no concern because it was a long ways out and just tiny."

He says they could see a funnel cloud forming back on shore.

"Brian, the guy in the front of the boat, he noticed the funnel cloud that was over land, the one in between Ridgetown and Morpeth. So that was the one we were concerned about," says Galbraith.

Galbraith says they were heading back to shore when he took the video.

"Where we had just been fishing, right in that area you could see the bigger one, the second spout, start forming. So it come down to the water, and it was just churning up the water," says Galbraith. "Hard to tell how wide it was at that point so then I thought 'I've got to get a little bit of video here,' so we stopped and that's when I shot that video."

Environment Canada is still investigating the funnel clouds and waterspout that were spotted in Chatham-Kent on Sunday morning.
