Man Allegedly Punches Out Police Officer's Glasses

A 26-year-old Ridgetown man is facing charges after allegedly stealing a bottle of apple whiskey and some cigarettes before assaulting a police officer.

Police say the man's accused of taking a $25 bottle of liquor from the LCBO in Ridgetown Wednesday afternoon even though he was ordered to stay away from that specific location.

After that, the man allegedly stole a pack of cigarettes from a variety store.

Police say an officer on general patrol found the man on Ebenezer St. and started arresting him when the man allegedly punched the officer in the face, breaking his glasses.

At that point, a local citizen stepped in to help the officer take the man into custody.

The officer who was punched in the face was treated in hospital for a cut to his cheek and later released.

The man he arrested is charged with assault a police officer, failing to comply with his release conditions, two counts of theft, and two counts of possession of stolen property.

He's being held in custody pending a bail hearing.
