Another Bear Sighting Reported To Police

Chatham-Kent police are asking residents to be "bear wise" after another sighting has been reported.

Police were called early Monday morning after a paramedic says he spotted two black bears in the Tupperville area.

Officers now say they have received another report of a bear sighting. This one had reportedly been seen Saturday afternoon in a wheat field near Merlin, on Pollard Line near Port Rd.

Although police have been getting reports of bear sightings, officers have not been able to confirm the sightings.

Police along with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry are reminding residents to call 911 if a bear is seen nearby.

There's also a Bear Wise Reporting Line for non-emergencies 1-866-514-2327. The reporting line is available 24/7 from April 1 - November 30.

Although bears usually avoid coming into contact with humans, they are attracted to smells. Should a person come in contact with a bear, police say it's important to remain calm. Their advice is to slowly back away, while keeping the bear in sight and wait for the bear to leave. If the bear doesn't leave, that's when one should wave their arms and make noise.
